I took the "cow" over to a friends shop last weekend to get a serious facelift, you might call this major surgery. Since I don't live where there is a desert in my backyard anymore, I decided to go in a different direction than the trail beater. I will keep all posted to the progress of the truck. I do need an old set of hinge and striker posts, if anyone is sitting on an old body. I've already gutted the inside and started cutting out sections of the floor. I'll probably start disassembling the frong clip this weekend. I have a set of door inserts and a rear seat for sale in the Houston area if anyone is interested. Items are in fair condition, inserts better.

Well it's been a while since I discussed the progress of the cow. I have the frame done, meening stripped, stretched, welded, motor and trans mounted, plumbed and wired (loose wires at ends, but ran on frame) Here's a few shots.

What's next, you ask? EVERYTHING! Trying to find a decent spray liner outfit to spray the underside so I can set the body back on the frame. After that I can start the slow, meticulous reassembly. The front clip will be fastened to an engine cage via dzus fasteners. I am still trying to decide on what material to use for the top. I can have a ragtop made (the wife likes that idea), or I can build a fiberglass hardtop. Personally I think I like the ragtop idea. This will be a "halfcab", by the way. The rear doors will be full size but, suicide . Any Ideas, comments or anything are welcome.

That thing looks cool!
BTW, check out www.armacoatings.com
My uncut was coated with it, and unlike Rhino, it was sprayed with a very fine gun and was tough as hell IMHO.

One other thing, as long as you have done the major mods are you going to lower the cage bars to the bottom of the doors ? Looks like it would be really easy to do now with the stretch job. I know that the seat mount tubes are mounted across there, but I just have this mental image of everyone getting out of your rig and all four people hooking they're feet on that bar and splat ...... Might win you some $$ on the real video show |

I have a feeling those bars will cost me some serious dental bills with my 5 year old . So I will probably drop those to a more reasonable height. Right now the cage is sorta tacked together so I can use it to help support the body against folding. Basically a mechanical viagra.

today I have been busy building a frame to rest the body on, upside down, so I can do a good cleaning of the underside. hopefully I will be able to get the body on the frame before too long. But thanks Bill, I appreciate that.

So that is the tub that was on the cow or is it another tub ? or Tub parts. How are you doing the rear door windows, square, with rectangle vent glass or are you sticking with the triangle glass ? Did you prime/ seal the floor support channels.
Did you decide on the por15 or are you going to use something else ?
For the top you said half cab, wouldn't a standard hartop with the rear windows removed be long enough to fit ? Instead of a rag top ? I think Dennis from 4xdoctors safari top would be long enough to cover the rear seats.

I found a frame and tub froma guy in San Antonio. The front part of the tub and frame are mine. I spliced the other parts in. most of the center floor is new steel. The rear windows will be square, solid (no windwing), same with the front (not square, just one piece). The floor support channels are only spot welded in place, I think I want to use a thicker coating for the undercoating. I'm looking into some of the bed liner folks here, but most seem to be a bit pricey (even by California standards). I figure that will seal EVERYthing really well. A wagon top is too long, And I don't know if I want the weight. Joelle (Mrs. Broncow) and I discussed the top options and think the versatility of a soft top would be better than a hard top that would have to be removed and stored before we even left the house. Keep in mind, here, we could have a "gully washer" (that equals 1/4-1/2 inch rain) in 20 minutes with no warning. Allbeit not common, but does happen. There's a custom upholstery shop near my house that does many hot rods, boats and other cool stuff. I'm trying to avoid the "off-the-shelf" items as much as possible. I know it won't be cheap, but what ever is? This will still be cheaper than buying a little runabout truck (that has four doors) . I think the fun part is gonna be when I have to find seats for it. I want front and rear bench type. Ya know, the kind you would find in an import truck. But I would rather have the beards IF they would build a bench that had lower sides and a slightly higher center section. I asked them and PRP and was given a rather large price. And that was to modify something they already had, not exactly what I wanted.
wow....am I still typing? I gotta go to bed.

I got the body back on the frame. Bolted it down with my new 1" body lift from Wildhorses via BC Broncos (?).

Looks like it won't fit into my garage, I hope it squats enough when I get all the weight of the other body parts, cage and interior added on.

length might be an issue, gotta wait and see after I get both bumpers on. Height was an issue,I thought. I put the cage in, for posteriety reasons (and to keep from scaring my skull [it was hung from the ceiling]). But when I pulled the truck into the garage with my neighbor, I noticeced I still had about 4 inches clearance. That meens I can move to the 35" tires next time . As far as garage depth... I don't think I have more than 2 inches to play with. And that is with the rear bumper (if I back in). I guess we'll have to wait and see. If I don't fit, I'll have to bash in the bumper. I did put the cage in to give a better feel of the "look"., sweeeeet. And for some reason I can't figure out how to up load photos tonight....Got 2 things on the fritz, my 'puter and my brain. Will try in the morning.

Alan, I remember watching a TV show on Limo making one time. They use the vinyl tops on them to hide the flexing in the roof from the long wheelbase. If your not already planning on it, I'd make sure to tie the roll cage into the frame to increase the resistance to the flexing.
Can't wait to see it done, Tom |

I did a basic drawing of what I have in mind for the cage tie-in, but can't upload it. When it is done I hope to have every corner and angle tied into itself, as to create a self supporting cage module that will have 10-12 points. Does that make sense?

Alright, it's been slow around here but, I got some things done. I mounted my hydroboos assyy. that I picked up from the salvage yard for $50 (that included pulling and cleaning the part). I have done a few other things like run some fuel lines and little stuff like that. It amazes me how much time it takes to do the little stuff. Even minor fabrication takes forever to do. UGH!

I had to move my brake pedal to the clutch pedal location to make room for the booster. Since I don't have a manual trans any more... no biggy.I will use the old brake mounting hole as a wiring port through the fire wall, since the connectors I am using won't fit through any of the other holes . I think I am closer to finishing than I previously thought (work wise, not time wise). Just need to find a small wad of cash that the wife doesn't know about .

It's been a while but it's been too hot to work in the garage lately. I have finished some of the little tedious stuff. Those little things can really take some time. I have the Hydroboost system plumbed, brakes plumbed, engine wired, charging system wired. Waiting of a reemer to finish the BC steering install. Will try to make the engine cage hoop this weekend and tie in the radiator and tranny cooler lines so I can start it. By the way, is there any trick to keeping brake fluid from leaking out of the top of the master cylinder or do I have to buy a unit with screw caps?

Hey Alan,
First of all, I've been following this for some time, and I think that you are doing something of a future legend. Keep up the good work, and let me know if you need any parts, because I might be able to help. Have you thought of going full-width axles, or maybe duallies in the back <- GREEN for sic!
Anyway, you gonna need lots o' power and the means to move a lot of weight without breakage. I assume it will be tough enough to do Moab? Keep the faith, Alan, what you are doing is super COOL. IMO the optimal wheel distance is around 100", give or take for vehicle accomodations (but, by the way, will be adjusted because your vehicle will be VERY accomodating . I assume a 460 ci will be the minimum engine displacement size (how about a six-pack instead of a four-barrel???). I may have an extra axle that you might be able to integrate into the system, and then have a 2-section rear drive shaft to hold it up higher out of the way of rocks. You are going long arm shocks in the front also, I presume.
I'm going to presume also that you already checked the rubber seal for serviceability and tried to bend closer the spring clamp on that master cylinder top... That said, I think there would be something at NAPA that other stores may not have in the way of dual cylinder masters. Once again IMO a dual cylinder system would provide more safety since you want to protect your family as well as possible. My Jeep Grand Cherokee has inner drum brakes for the emergency brake, maybe that might be an option, although I doubt they make them that size. It's gonna be really good, and you are really making good progress.
Keep up the posts, this is great stuff. |
