Hey guys-there is a '66 "Bronco Pick-up" for sale in our local paper. It says 3 speed manual transmission, 4 wheel drive, 302 V8, dual exhaust, no title. $1600 or best offer.
What do you think about this? Is it worth looking into? I have been secretly hoping to get an early Bronco for a long time. Could this be the one? When I call for more info, what all should I ask? I know basic stuff since we have Jeeps, but anything Bronco specific?
I read that they drastically changed the Bronco in 1969 or so, so was wondering if the super early models are OK? Or would a later "early" model be better overall?
Thanks for any help or opinions! |

Depending on the shape, a 66 might bring anywhere for $500 to $30K. Your looking a one of only 18,200 66s built and many of those have long since been crashed, scraped or left to rot in some farmers field.
If you can post some pics I could tell you if it's worth it. The 66 was the debut Bronco year. It had a dana 30 front and Ford 9" 28 spline rear. Both with drum breaks. It should also have a dana 20 T-case. The 20 is very good, steel casing and gear driven (a jeep 231 is alum case and chain driven) plus if you add an NP-435 tranny you can get a 6.69 to 1 "granny 1st gear". Biggest issue with being that old is rust, but there are several after market places making body panels and floor pans for them. The 302 is a great engine even with a carb. (I'm running a mc2100 with great results)
The door/windows changed in 68, only 66 and 67 will fit that rig. Other wise just about everything else (but not quite) will interchange on all EBs 66 to 77. EB dana 44 front axles can be had for fairly cheep and is a great up-grade for semi-mild wheeling. The swap is very easy.
Some links for you: http://www.76bronco.com/page/page/1982005.htm http://www.broncohio.com/tech/ebvins.html
I would ask about the paperwork on the rig. When was the last time it was titled and by whom. If it has been crashed, etc. Check for rust around the entire rig, places like the whindshield frame, door posts, floor pans and inner fenders.
You might want to see why he is selling? you might be able to low-ball on the price.
Keep in mind that you are looking a a rig that is 42 years old, it will need alot of little things to make it a good DD or trail rig. Little stuff like new bushings on the suspension etc and new break lines or any other rubber parts that may have become weathered will add up fast.
You will give up some things compaired to a jeep, such as width at the fenders. Things get a lot tighter in an EB. The trade off is you get much more room for cargo, camping gear or beer.
Cool thing about them is the classic style of the EB. Give it a fresh coat and enjoy the ride. Steve |
