Well, its time to start planning for our 3rd annual run this year. After deliberating with a few other past attendees, we have decide to go back and run the Dusy Ershim trail again this year. The dates for now are set from August 24-27, 2006. This should be another amazing trip!

Again, this is not an "organized" run, which means that there are no entry fees, no tech inspections, no B.S.! All rigs are welcome no matter what you drive as long as you are built enough to handle the trail. 33s and at least one locker are a must.
Last years run was our biggest yet with five Early Broncos and three Jeeps. Unfortunately, my rig did not make the trip last year, but I was able to ride bitch in Mike's CJ7 for the trip and take a ton of pics. This year will be another big question mark as to whether or not a rig of mine will be there. Especially considering I parted my rig out recently. So, I'm leaning towards riding bitch again this time.
Last year's write-up can be found here: http://www.broncoholics.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1860
And the first ever BA fun-run is here: http://www.broncoholics.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=701
The plan for the trip is as follows: Wednesday will be a travel day to get into the general area of the trail. That means we will be meeting in Shaver Lake. A good place to camp is at Edison Campground. The have shows and spots just big enough for the tow rigs. We will hit the trailhead on Thursday morning and will not be returning back to the starting point until Sunday morning, so you will need to make arrangements to find a place to park your tow rig if needed. I believe that the marina allows you to park your rig their for a nominal fee.
This is not a "return to camp each evening" type of run. You will be packing everything in and out as you will be camping along the trail. We will decide in the near future which direction we are going to run the trail, and I will add more info to this itinerary as we get closer to the departure date.
The trail is located about 75mi east of Fresno, CA. For more information about the trail and its general description you can go here: http://www.californiajeeper.com/dusy_ershim/review.htm
If you are interested in going please PM me your info. I need a real name, address, and cell phone number if possible so I can put together a phone list so everyone has one and nobody gets left behind. I know its early, but if you are interested, please post up. |

I'm gonna try real hard to make this run. I may have to ditch school, and I'll have to find time to put my rig back together. But what the hey! you have to have goals right? Tom |

Wow! Scott! I just read an article in the latest 4WD magazine on a Dusy/Ershim trail run and I got to say, I would love to do this trip!! I was pulling for a Rubicon trip but this looks like "diamn fun"! Now I just need to get my "junk" toughened up! |

Sharpie me in too. How could I not go with my ugly mug at the head of the post. For both wheeling and scenery, the Dusy-Ershim is right up there. Going in the opposite way this year would be some good wheeling. Whether to go down Thompson hill and all the way out, or back out the way we came in, I guess depends on how sore Scotty's ass gets bouncing down the trail in a jeep. Didn't hear any griping from the Bronco folks about the rocky trail on their butts! There it is: a great reason Scotty should get another EB instead of a jeep.

Scott, pencil me in please. I'm hoping for the black and red to be up if the other one doesn't materialize soon. If it does the black and red may be cannibalized and sold off to get the new beast up and smooth. But definitely I want to go this year. Rick |

Well I just started back on the broncoholics thread yesterday. I had signed up to go last year but backed out because I moved from Arizona to Utah in late July. I really want to do this trail, so I am going to sign up to go this year again. I was going to drive the Big Bronco to the trail last year but this year I have a F350 PSD tow truck and trailer. I also have new Dana 60's I will be trying out in Moab next week. So sign me up again Scotty.

wampler68 Some details on that OJ Bronco might come in helpfull. I wheeled with a 6" TTB D44 Bronco for many years. I even made a 1600+ mile trip from to Tucson to Deadwood South Dekota to wheel the TTB Bronco for 5 days and then drove it back. Did Moab 3 times that same way too. I now have a HP Dana 60 front and rear and my Bronco is a trailer queen now. I miss the good old days when I cold drive the Bronco 100's of miles to wheel but then again now I have a 2006 F350 tow rig and a 10000 GVWR trailer. |

Alright guys. I have been looking at the current snow reports and stuff for the central Sierras and have MAJOR concerns that Dusy Ershim trail will not open this year. Mammoth Moutain has had record snow fall of 632 inches so far this year. Its currently a 15-17ft base right now. I seriously doubt that Dusy will be ready by the time we have planned our trip, let alone at all this year. So, with that in mind, I want to hear suggestions for a possible change of venue. Thoughts????
Rubicon is always as option, but I would much rather do it mid week M-F to really take the time to enjoy it. |

I'm in for anything we do. Unlike most, my rig is up 100% right now. If the Ducy doesnt open, do we want to try a couple of the other trails up there like swamp lake? I have faith that the ducy will be open by the 24th of aug. |

Well, I'm out. I got my bronco almost back on 4 wheels over memorial day, but I won't have another chance to work on it before august. No way I can have it prepped for a trip like this. Tom |

I just got a reply back from the Four Wheel Drive Club of Fresno (they clear the trail every year). Here is my letter to them and their reply:
Dan Eger wrote:
To who it may concern, In searching for information on the Dusy-Ershim trail I ran across a picture of a trail head sign that sent me looking for your club. I have been trying to locate information on when it is estimated that the Dusy-Ershim trail would be open this year. From what I can find it seems that your club should be the correct contact to get this information. I am planning on doing a trip thru the trail from 8/24 to 8/27 going in from the Kaiser Pass side, camping a full day at Ershim lake, spending the night near the Cartwright end and head home on Sunday. There is concern that the trail may not open this year, or may open after our trip is planed for. Could you comment on this? I have been on the Dusy-Ershim trial once before in 1997 or 1998. I was very impressed with the scenery and beauty of the area. This coupled with the low traffic (as compared to my annual Rubicon trip) made that trip one of the most memorable off road trips that I have ever had. I want to share that experience with my wife who loves these trips almost as much as I do. I noticed in your newsletter that you have funding for placing bathroom facilities on the trail at Thompson Lake. I would be happy to carry in supplies for this project. Let me know if I can be of assistance for this. Even though the group of people that I am going with on this trip is relatively new to me, I always make sure to leave the trail cleaner than I found it. Please let me know your clubs position on if/when you think the trail will be opened. Thank you for your time James “Dan” Eger
Their reply:
Hi Dan,
I am one of the trail chairman and the trail will be open this year!!!!! We are waiting on the snow agin this year, we are going to try to go around the end of July sooner if possible. Keep an I on the web site for up dates.

The current dates are fine by me. Additional dates that would work for me:
8/26-8/29 8/31-9/3(4) Labor day ouch! 9/2-9/5 9/7-9/10 9/9-9/12 9/14-9/17 9/16-9/19 The next weekend is my Wifes birthday and that anit happenenig!
BTW, remember, the later in the year we go at this point the more open to radical changes in the weather we are.
