This may be the last tie rod you're going to buy. It's a little overkill. The Tie Rod will be made of 1.5 dia. solid A2 tool steel (not a tubing)and heat treated to 48-52 Rockwell C hardness. Weighs about 15 lbs.
So far, to make one piece my estimate is: tool steel is $90, machining internal threads is $45, and heat treat is $44. Say $200 with all taxes paid, excluding shipping.
If we do a mass buy, my good guess will be $148 + tax + shipping. I need 9 orders before we can proceed. Just go ahead and post if you're in. Please specify overall length.
You can see the pics in the General Discussion under "Hi-steer under 2 hours".
Thanks.

I want in on this also. I have to get some measurements for you though. I have dodge parts from the turn knuckle out with tie-rod over.

Sorry, there's a typo. By mistake, I put it down as 1.5 inches in diameter. It should be 1.25 which is already more than enough, however, if you guys want it bigger, add $20. I thought of that at the beginning, it was huge and mighty heavy, so I went to 1.25 dia.
The TREs are not included, this is just for the threaded and heat treated tie rod.
The ends, you can pick them up for about $28 each at your local parts store.

I am assuming that this buy is for both rods. What ends fit this set-up?
Thanks

My working experience with tool steel, there is very little flex. They will break, shatter or crack once excessive load is applied. I would think that the tie rod ends will break before the tie rod gives.
The mass buy will only include 1 piece - tie rod, no drag link - which doesn't have to be of the same steel. For that, a chrome moly tubing will be sufficient and less expensive. For $60 you can have it made.

Sorry, but I'm out. I think heavy wall chromoly would be a better choice, I may be wrong but, for my needs anyways.

Absolutely, chromemoly will do the job. The A2 tool steel is an overkill, but don't we over design most of the stuffs we put on our rigs.
I'll dig out info on the physical properties of both steels and do a comparison.

Joel, Do you happen to know the thread size and pitch for those TREs? I wrecked both my drag link and tie rod last week, but I'm going to make my own out of DOM. Just need to check to see if I have both taps.
I can single piont the threads, but would rather not if I don't have to.
Thanks Steve |

Sorry for the slow response.
For the Chevy Tie Rod Ends - It's 7/8-18LH and RH, depth is about 2.25 to 2.5 inches.
On mine, the machine shop didn't use a tap, but just cut it on the lathe. The thread came out clean and smooth.
