Posted - 01/24/2006 : 9:38:22 PM Well, its time to start planning for our 3rd annual run this year. After deliberating with a few other past attendees, we have decide to go back and run the Dusy Ershim trail again this year. The dates for now are set from August 24-27, 2006. This should be another amazing trip!

Again, this is not an "organized" run, which means that there are no entry fees, no tech inspections, no B.S.! All rigs are welcome no matter what you drive as long as you are built enough to handle the trail. 33s and at least one locker are a must.
Last years run was our biggest yet with five Early Broncos and three Jeeps. Unfortunately, my rig did not make the trip last year, but I was able to ride bitch in Mike's CJ7 for the trip and take a ton of pics. This year will be another big question mark as to whether or not a rig of mine will be there. Especially considering I parted my rig out recently. So, I'm leaning towards riding bitch again this time.
Last year's write-up can be found here: http://www.broncoholics.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1860
And the first ever BA fun-run is here: http://www.broncoholics.com/support/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=701
The plan for the trip is as follows: Wednesday will be a travel day to get into the general area of the trail. That means we will be meeting in Shaver Lake. A good place to camp is at Edison Campground. The have shows and spots just big enough for the tow rigs. We will hit the trailhead on Thursday morning and will not be returning back to the starting point until Sunday morning, so you will need to make arrangements to find a place to park your tow rig if needed. I believe that the marina allows you to park your rig their for a nominal fee.
This is not a "return to camp each evening" type of run. You will be packing everything in and out as you will be camping along the trail. We will decide in the near future which direction we are going to run the trail, and I will add more info to this itinerary as we get closer to the departure date.
The trail is located about 75mi east of Fresno, CA. For more information about the trail and its general description you can go here: http://www.californiajeeper.com/dusy_ershim/review.htm
If you are interested in going please PM me your info. I need a real name, address, and cell phone number if possible so I can put together a phone list so everyone has one and nobody gets left behind. I know its early, but if you are interested, please post up. |

Posted - 09/14/2006 : 07:22:02 AM There were no full sizes on our run, but I did see a couple on the trail. You can do it in a capable full size rig, but there WILL be body dammage. I think that it can be done with minimal damage to the trees though. |

Posted - 09/13/2006 : 07:56:13 AM Don't believe there were any, altho wasn't on run. Did it last year, and numerous narrow tree squeezes would make it tough. Greg

Posted - 08/29/2006 : 08:25:05 AM Any pics guys???? Steering boxes are always on issue on long trails like this. I lost one on the Rubicon a couple years ago. Ripped her clean off the frame. Ended up drill the frame and running a u-bolt through it to keep it in place. |

Day one, we meet with Dan, Renee, Mike, Ralph, and Norm at the Edison camp ground, in Shaver Lake. So with Ernie, Eric, Larry, Charles, Robbie, Mike, Miriam, and myself we headed for the trail head, with Dan in the lead. We started down the trail, with me getting hung up on a rock right of the back, soon after Mike blew the bead of the rear tire. After that it was pretty flawless to the first camp site. This was a great group of people to go wheeling with. Dan and his group decided to stay at the first camp site the next day and rest, hang out and take in the ambience. We how ever decide to move on, just in case of any problems we would have more time to have to take on any unexpected problems. Day two ; the trail was a little easier than the first day, but still tough. Ernie's rig has been experiencing vapor lock, so we cut aluminum cans and wrapped it around the fuel line, ( Dan's idea ) and it helped a lot. Then Charles, tore the spring perch right off the frame. We started my premier welder, and a puff of smoke came out of the welder. So Ernie tore the welding box apart, and with Ernie, Eric and I repaired the box, with replacing the ground wire. Ernie finished welding the perch back together, and we were back on the trail. Next on the trail repairs was Larry Ujoint., easy fix. My transfer case started to separate, rebolted it back together. Also lost a shock bolt, had to jerry rigged one in. Camped at Thompson lake the on the second night, nice area. The third day, now this is were things got exciting. We had five miles left of the 32 mile trail, I hit a tree stump that broke the steering box, I was done. Ernie thinking again, decided to go down chicken rock, and hike Larry steering box back to me. Great five and a half hours later, I was back on the road. I finished going down chicken rock, I had one mile to go, and the transfer case grenaded, a eight inch diameter piece flew apart, gear oil everywhere, and metal parts falling out. So the last mile I was towed out (by Mike and yes it was a Jeep that pulled me out). also just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the great trip

WHOLLY CRAP DON!
We heard about the CJ5 loosing a spring perch from some rigs that camped at Ershim lake that night and we thought from how far back on the trail and how long ago on the passed you that you guys must have been having a bad day but WOW! The 4 remaining EB's that were running on the original schedule that Scotty had laid out had very few problems compared to Don's group.
After Don's group left camp Ralph and Mike went to try their luck at fishing in Ershim lake. As it ends up you need to get out to the middle of the lake to fish there. Renee and I went for a hike around the lake and to soak in some sun. Norm went for a hike around the other direction a bit later.
We broke camp on Saturday morning by 9:00 AM. Renee drove most of the way over to East Lake where we had lunch. Then I took over and we made our way to Thompson Lake. Ralph and Mike decided to feed the mosquitoes for a few minutes while attempting to fish the lake but decided to give up before they passed out from giving too much blood. That evening Ralph discovered that his Stack box generated enough torque on his rear axle to crush his spring perches. They (Ralph, Norm and Mike) decided that all they needed to do was to tighten the u-bolts (I was prepared for the next day). We were going to be entertained by the Trail Ready rock buggy crew this evening by watching them race up Thompson hill, but we left slightly late and didn't hook up with them.
Sunday was our eventful day. We broke camp again by 9:00 AM. It didn't take long before I noticed that I had considerably more "slop" in my steering than there should be. So we pulled over and discovered that one of the mounting bolts had snapped. While I was digging for a replacement Ralph had reconsidered his spring perches and decided to take me up on my offer to weld in some spare bits of metal that I had with me. As Ralph, Norm and Mike prepared Ralph's rig for the trail wedges Mike and I put together a 3/8" bolt, stack of washers, and a chain to the opposite frame rail to take care of my issue. When I finished Ralph and I took our batteries over to Ralph’s rig and waited a few minutes for them to be ready. The ready welder filled in the remaining gap and off we went to experience the decent of Thompson hill. Although Thompson hill kept our attention, for the most part the rest of the trip went off without a hitch. Nobody even ran out of gas! The only other thing of note was the rock pile at the bottom of Chicken Rock was a pain to go thru. Mike did some pretty decent damage to his passenger side door insert. I wish I could have done something to prevent that.
We parted ways at the 76 station in Shaver Lake. Everyone had a good time.
Sorry to hear about the mega-crap that Don's group had gone thru.
Happy Trails,
Dan

Posted - 08/15/2006 : 8:18:41 PM Hey guys, I have some bad news. My wife and I found out this week that she is starting a new job right before we are leaving. The bad news is that I need to be around that week to help transfer the kids around and stuff. I was hoping find an alternate plan to still be able to go, but at this point I am out.
Now, there are still a bunch of guys going. Most are Jeep guys, but still, they are Jeepaholics members and good friends of mine. So, I will get you in touch with them. They are already on this thread as well, so you can touch base with them simply by replying.
Sorry to back out at such a late date. I am really bummed to miss this run, but family comes first.
So, for those still going, please get in touch with Dan Eger and Norm Hieger. Meeting place and time should still be the same.
Key guys to look for are Aaron Stafford(Blazerman), and Mike Opper(LTCJeep).
